what causes hyperglycemia?
Managing diabetes is not easy. It isn't just about counting carbs or watching your sugar intake.
High blood sugar, or hyperglycemia, is an annoying, dangerous and frustrating part of dealing with diabetes.
It can cause headaches, fatigue, extreme thirst, hunger and a general feeling of being unwell. If hyperglycemia is left untreated for a long amount of time, there are serious complications such as nerve damage and kidney failure.
Most people associate hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar, with the consumption of sugar. While eating foods with lots of sugar does raise blood sugar , there are many other factors that lead to high blood sugar levels.
These can include ;
Stress
Being Sick, such as with an infection
Dehydration
Medicine, such as steroids
Carbohydrate consumption without proper medicine
Caffeine
The morning (Dawn Phenomenon - there are higher levels of hormones that can raise blood sugar levels in the body in the morning)
Not enough sleep
It is important to keep in mind that not everyone is the same. What raises one persons blood sugar can have little or no effect on a different individual.
This is why it is important to manage blood sugar levels consistently throughout the day and be mindful of what affects you personally. Know how your body reacts to different factors and adjust accordingly.
